WSOPC: Big Bucks, No Whammy

So, B-Mart alluded to my weekend plans with her and GMYH over on her blog. I can tell you with great ease that I am filled with equal parts fear, doubt, hope, thoughts of world domination, and pop culture. I really have no idea how this will play out. All I can hope for is that we frakkin' bring it. I know I plan on being as on my game as I can be. Either way, I imagine copious amounts of alcohol will be imbibed following our trial by fire. Wow, if you read that sentence you might think I was taking the ACT and not a quiz about movies, music, and television.

In other news, I am all caught up on the brilliant Battlestar Galactica. There really are just no words for how frakkin' awesome this show is. As I called, season three made so much more sense to me once I had seen the miniseries and the first two seasons. Now I wish I had bought that Frakkin' Toaster shirt Glarkware had on sale a few months back. My only hope is that they offer it up again sometime soon. I really can't wait for the upcoming episodes which I am calling "The Passion of Gauis." Seriously, is James Callis rocking the Anglo-Jesus look or what?*

So, Gilmore last night. B-Mart, I am sure we are to disagree as you like the Chris and I do not. So, I was glad to see him leave, although it was quite babyish. However, I kind of felt badish for him last night reading that letter. It was more like an exasperated, "DUH, tard boy. How did you not remember that you were never a father to Rory. God. And aren't you the tool who frakked Lor three seconds after she left her fiance'? How are you not the rebound guy? Sigh. Why do I take this stuff so seriously?" Also, poor Grandpa Gilmore. They better not hurt him or else.

Lastly, I finished the Jane Eyre miniseries on PBS. As someone on TWoP said, Toby Stephens is "TEH SEX and I want to lick him." To that I say, "word". Now, I am watching the Colin Firth version of Pride and Prejuidice. I've never seen it before. And nobody plays stick in the mud like Firth. So far, part one was pretty darn good. Unfortch, the wet shirt scene is in part two. Why does Netflix vex me so? And, since Bill brought up Bridget Jones, I thought those of you who like P&P might find this piece from the cutting room floor wherein Bridget interviews Colin Firth (like in the second book) pretty funny.

*Sorry to possibly spoil Bill but you can't get me addicted to a show and then expect me to never speak of it.

Jane Eyre: Part Deux

A while ago I gave you some of my thoughts on the novel Jane Eyre. I must say that reading the book I never thought that Rochester was all that dashing. Witty? Yes. A good match for Jane? I wasn't sure I bought it. Like I said last time, my best gal pal Angie believed this was due to my modern ways and thoughts. I could and do agree with that to some extent. Last night though, I changed my mind.

For those of you who don't know, PBS has a new Masterpiece Theater entitled Jane Eyre. Okay, first of all Rochester is played by the brilliant Toby Stephens who I loved in Twelfth Night. Secondly, they do all the spooky stuff really well. If you've read Jane then you will know that it's a bit of a ghost story and a love story. Masterpiece Theater does a good job of making things a bit eerie without going overboard. Thirdly, I don't know if it's Toby Stephens or what but Jane was right about that Mr. Rochester. He's dreamy. Fourth, they made Adele as annoying as I thought she might be. Finally, I just love the casting of Jane Eyre. Ruth Wilson isn't a beauty or at least not one of those women who you look at and say wow, she's hot but she's cute and she does Jane proud. In a way it reminds me of Ugly Betty. She's not a girl who is "traditionally" beautiful but in reality she is. The last finally part, the beyotchy Blanche Ingram is played by the evil girl from What a Girl Wants. Shut up. I can't help it that I am a sucker for all things Colin Firth (especially movies where he puts on leather pants and dances around). Anyway, I think I might be a closet Anglofile, much to the dismay of my darling Squatter. He's very anti-Anglofile.

So, Part One was last week and Jane has just left to go see the dreadful Mrs. Reed. I can't wait to see the ending. Yes, I know that I know how it ends. I don't care. I am anxiously awaiting what is to come. If you love all things BBC, like I do, then you won't be disappointed. Check out part two or wait for the dvd. I know it's going on my Amazon list. I think I need to reread Jane Eyre.

Drinking, Smoking, and Screwing: A Review

I just finished the book Drinking, Smoking, and Screwing: Great Writers on Good Times. This book is a collection of poems, short stories, and book chapters that deal with, well, drinking, smoking, and screwing.

I liked this because it was easy to read at lunch. Sometimes when I am reading a book at lunch it's hard to find the right cut off point if a chapter is particularly long. Not so with a book like this one.

I also got to read the work of some people I have never read before like Charlie Bukowski and James Thurber. The book also reminded me why I like Dorothy Parker.

Happiness, thy name is Berlanti

OMG! Ausiello is reporting that Emily VanCamp (forever in my heart as Amy Abbott) is going to play Rebecca on Brothers and Sisters. Woot! I love it when my former Everwoodies get acting jobs and on shows that I even watch and like. I actually gasped in my office reading the news. Bless you, Ausiello for starting the rumor, keeping it going, and never giving up hope that it would come true. I am just happy to see Emily back on a Greg Berlanti show. Now we just need Gregory Smith to show up and my little heart might just burst with happiness.

As for Gilmore Girls last night, I am reserving my thoughts for a later time. I want to watch the episode a second time. But, I did love the Monkey, Monkey Unperpants line (hee) and the long awaited return of my beloved strummy strummy la la music. B-Mart, what did you think?

Team Henry!

It looks like Christopher Gorham is going to be a regular on Ugly Betty. Woohoo!

Now, it's time to get rid of Walter. No offense to Kevin Sussman or anything but I just love Chris Gorham. But you already knew that because I told you so.

Speaking of telling people so, I hope you all go out and watch Lauren Graham's new flick, Because I Said So. Lauren stars opposite Diane Keaton and Mandy Moore in this movie that is sure to be a chick flick. I don't care about that. I just want Lauren to have a flourishing career after Gilmore Girls ends; whenever that happens.

Walkout

This weekend I didn't do a whole lot. There are a couple of reasons for that but mostly it's because I just didn't feel much like going out.

I did get to see my family on Saturday. One of my nieces turned three and so I went to a little party for her. Watching a three year old unwrap presents is pretty entertaining. Then, I had an impromptu slumber party with my oldest sister who didn't want to drive home in the snow only to turn around and drive back to the city for work on Sunday morning. That was fun.

I also watched an interesting HBO docudrama called Walkout on Saturday. Walkout is the true story of the Chicano student movement of 1968. The movie focuses on the core group of student demonstrators but especially on a girl named Paula. With the guidance of a Chicano teacher, the students build support in the, then, five high schools in East L.A. to get equal education for the students. The movement gained momentum and eventually support when the walkouts continued to happen. It was a pretty inspirational film and just goes to show that collective action can make real changes or at least it used to. The following school year the number of Chicano students enrolled at UCLA increased from 40 to 1,200.

I did get to watch Rome last night. It was pretty bitchin'. I am sad to see that Max Pirkis will not be back for the rest of the season but I suppose Octavian needed to age at some point. Also, Cleopatra totally checked out Pullo and I think realized that he's the real father of her child and not Caesar. Again, can't wait for next week.

I am waiting before watching any new episodes of Battlestar Galactica until I get all caught up on the story. I have the last two dvds of season 2.5 to finish and then I am rewatching season 3 and completely being caught up. It's been hard to not click on the TWoP recaplet this morning.

Otherwise, my life is Arabic homework and studying for the World Series of Pop Culture auditions.

Forever in Blue

Forever in Blue:The Fourth Summer of the Sisterhood by Ann Brashares

I have been anxiously awaiting the final installment of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series since about three minutes after finishing book three.

Book four picks up the summer after Carmen, Bridget, Tibby, and Lena spent their first year apart at college. Rather than wearing the pants only in the summer the girls wear them year round since they are always apart.

I don't want to ruin all the details for you but I thought Brashares did an effective job of describing how people often lose and find themselves when they enter that freshman year of college. These girls and their bond remains but rather than it just being there, well, they have to work on their friendships to make sure they the sisterhood remains. Sometimes they excel at this but often they falter.

As usual, I tend to feel Carmen's story more than the others. I seem to relate to her the most. And, as usual, I laughed and cried along with the girls. Also, there were definitely some more adult themes (read: sex) in this book than in the others. Looks like my niece won't be getting these from me for a few more years.

This book is a fine ending to a touching series. I only wish we could get one more book about five years in the future so I could see where these girls end up after college.

Rome-a-licious

Well, as I previously wrote about, Rome is back. If it's possible, it is better than ever. I spent a good part of the last week rewatching season one to get back into Rome. It's funny how a year will change your perspective. When I first watched season one I really hated Atia. I thought she was quite a loathsome creature. She was a nasty, scheming beyotch. This time around, while I still found her quite loathsome, I was shocked at how much less I liked Servillia. I have little to no sympathy for her. But, I suppose the old adage is truer here than in most cases, hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. Servillia proved that maxim over and over again. I can't wait to see Servillia get her seriously deserved comeuppance.

So, season two. Mikey T. seems to think there is more swearing this go round. I am not sure I agree or rather, I didn't notice it. I was really impressed by the first episode and when it was over I couldn't quite believe an hour had passed. I wanted more.

So, the run down....

The Awesome:

Vorenus going a little bat shit crazy and Pullo being the one to bring him back to life. Talk about some role reversal.

Vorenus and Pullo slaughtering Erastes Fullman's crew and then Erastes himself. Who deserves a beheading more than Erastes? Well, Servillia but I will settle for Erastes. For now anyway.

Mark Antony's slaying of Pompey's son, Quintis. Good riddance, Lt. Harry Welsh.

Calpurnia's brash face spitting reserved for Servillia. That shit was great.

Octavian assuming his new role as Caesar's heir. I loved how it kind of pissed of Mark Antony. I get the feeling there will be more of that to come.

Mark Antony kicking Brutus, Cassius, Cicero, etc. out of town and then forcing Servillia to stay behind. Nice work, MA.

The Bad:

Pullo and Eirene's engagement. Hands of my man, you slave wench. Hee.

Also, Pullo was fully clothed this whole episode. Seems a little unfair to me.

The Sad:

Niobe's funeral pyre was terribly sad. It was made more so by the fact that her children were not there. Which leads me to...Vorenus damning his children and then Erastes kidnapping the kids and violating them. I was crying during Niobe's funeral.

Caesar's funeral pyre was quite moving too.

Can't wait until next Tuesday to find out what happens next. Why Tuesday you ask? Well, because of BSG's move to Sunday. That's why.

Speaking of BSG, well, I am almost half way through season two. I also tivoed yesterday's season three marathon and I plan to rewatch all those episodes after I finish season two. They will probably make a lot more sense to me.

The one where I try to be entertaining but I don't quite think I pulled it off

Today I received one of the funniest emails I've gotten in a very long time. I laughed out loud several times. Now, most of my dear readers may not find any of these things funny for a couple of reasons. Those reasons are as follows:1) you never worked at HC and 2) you do not actually know the people I am talking about. But I can say with great ease that this group of folks are the only reason I maintained sanity while living in SoInd (that's my attempt to try to make Southern Indiana sound cooler like SoCal only it's not quite as catchy sounding).

Nota bene: To keep the anonymity of all persons involved, I am using what are commonly known as the porn names of my pals (i.e. Childhood Animal + Street you grew up on) with a few exceptions.

And now on to the show.

Cheap Beer: A farce in five acts.

Setting: The Broadway on a cold Wednesday night. The rag tag team of scholars and collegiate workers sit in plastic chairs in front of a "fireplace" drinking many a beer. Many, many a beer. Although, I understand that Rico Suave did not drink enough to cover the drinking habits of himself, myself, and Poochie Goldenrod as he specifically agreed to do. Punishments will abound for this lax treatment of alcohol. Possibly food was eaten but not near enough to soak up the beer. And really, that's the way it should be.

Act One:
Rico Suave stands in the lobby of the Broadway awaiting a table. Another couple comes in and sees a brown man. He must work here and not actually be a professor. Couple: IS THERE A TABLE AVAILABLE, HISPANIC, ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT MAN? Rico: Que?

Act Two:
As our rag tag team sits down, Salty and Smoky Nuts is trying to decide if he should take his nuts to his mother's home so they can be enjoyed over a rousing game of football. Deucey Idlewild, well known for only half listening to Salty and Smoky Nuts, asks if his nuts are Salty or Smoky. An innocent question for sure, until Butterscotch West gets involved. Butterscotch inquires, "wouldn't you be the best judge of that, Deucey?" Butterscotch is alluding to the former relations had between Salty and Deucey. Does Deucey ever get an answer? Will Deucey beat down Butterscotch? Tune in next week.

Act Three:
As it goes with beer drinking the conversation tends to get out of hand. Someone, probably Yukon Locust, calls for a song. Butterscotch and Snoopy Missionwood can not let this challenge go. As if they had been practicing for weeks, they begin belting out the chorus to the old standard "Dick in a Box." Butterscotch and Snoopy remind us how one gets their dick in a box with this, "One: You cut a hole in a box. Two: You put your junk in that box. Three: You let her open that box. And that's the way you do it." Soon after Salty and Smoky Nuts asks for pen and paper to write down these instructions.

Act Four:
Yukon has gone home to take care of his child, Madison the Second. But never fear because Rosey Goldenrod swoops in to take his place. Someone asks innocently, "why does Bovine Jaw not let his employees have family pictures on their desks?" Rosey Goldenrod replies (rather smartly I might add), "who knows? Bovine Jaw does like to swing his miniature p***s around." To which I say, brava.

Act Five:
Poochie Goldenrod, well known for her penchant to move houses on average of once a year or so, has decided that the Goldenrod family will once again be moving. Poochie recreates the scenario where she tells her mother-in-law about the move.
Poochie
: Guess what? We are moving again. Isn't that great? Not as great as my ta-tas but great none-the-less?
MIL: Are you trying to kill my son?
Poochie: Yes, but only in the bedroom with my inner thighs.

Round One goes to Poochie and her ta-tas.

Finale:
The rag tag team of scholars and collegiate workers stumble back to their homes. It's a good thing the Goldenrod's are related to the town po-po.

HC folks, I miss you all.

ETA: Sorry for the Deucey misspellings.

Jake 2.0

I've liked Chris Gorham since I saw him in the awesome and campy show Popular. When he showed up on Ugly Betty as the super cute Henry I squeed along with all of the other fan girls. But then I went a step further. I made a Chris Gorham wish list on my tivo and set it to record all things Chris Gorham. See, this is why I love tivo!

Anyhoodle, tivo picked up reruns of Gorham's now cancelled show Jake 2.0 on the SciFi channel. The show is kind of like Alias only with a cute boy instead of Sydney. Also, Matt Czuchry (aka Logan on Gilmore Girls) stars as Jake's best pal in the pilot. Who knew? Not me.

Jake 2.0 is pretty fun so far. The premise is that Jake, a computer tech, gets caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. He becomes infected with nanites that turn him into this super soldier/agent guy. There is of course the requisite long time unrequited love Jake has for Sarah (a pal from college); the cute but dorky scientist who oversees Jake's metamorphosis and harbors a secret crush on Jake; Jake's hard nosed partner with a past and probably a heart of gold; and the uptight head of the department.

SciFi is running the entire series over the next couple of Friday nights. You will have missed the first three episodes but it's not hard to pick up the plot. And if it is you can always read the TWoP recaps linked above. I feel like this is one of those good/bad things. I am sad to see that Jake 2.0 is no more but then if it hadn't been cancelled, who would be playing Henry? I don't want to even think about that.

THIRTEEN!

For those of you who don't know, I kind of LOVE the HBO show Rome. What I love most is that season two (and the final season) begins on Sunday. You can spend this week catching up on season one via ondemand or just regular ol' HBO. The previews look crazy intense and the scheming seems to have only begun.

Rome has everything any great television drama should have. It's got sex, greed, double dealing, power plays, a bit of the funny, a lot of nudity (some girl on girl action and a naked Marc Antony [woot!]), some gore, and some fantastic writing. Also, Pullo is hot. I would happily become a citizen of Rome for that brute with a heart of gold. Also, Octavian (who later becomes Caesar Augustus) is played marvelously by the young Max Pirkis. I hope this kid has a great future ahead of him as an actor.

I know that Mikey T. shares my Rome love but really, if you've got cable, you should totally check this show out. I mean, it's not like you don't know what's going to happen. It is history afterall. But the latin scholar inside of me cannot stay away. And really, neither should you.

A new favorite

Maire comes through again.

Check out John Green's, author of ya books Looking for Alaska and An Abundance of Katherines, video blog with his brother. Some of the funniest stuff I have seen in a while.

I actually laughed out loud at work. Some of the catalogers looked at me strangely.

Five things you don't know about me

Maire tagged me.

1. I was born with black eyes.

2. Until I was thirteen I wanted to be a soap opera actress and/or singer.

3. The first cuss word I ever said was in farsi and I was two years old. Ha!

4. Swimming laps is my favorite exercise but I have no access to a pool.

5. I could really use a professional pedicure.

I am tagging Bill, B-Mart, Handrew, and Mikey T.

An update

You may notice that I signed up for Blogger beta. Or not beta anymore. Whatever. All I know is that I lost a bunch of customization. So, don't be offended if you aren't on the scroll bar right this second. I am redoing my customization as I type this.

The year ended and I'm a little late

I know I haven't blogged in a while but that's mostly because I haven't really had much to say. However, I've read a couple of books, seen some telly, and a movie or two. And I plan on telling you all about these things.

So, first things first; the books.

Herland by Charlotte Perkins Gilman.

Herland is a novel about a feminist utopia. Gilman sets a story where there is a land inhabited only by women (located somewhere in South America, I assume from the story). Three inquisitive American men go looking for this no man's land. What they find is something akin to a socialist society where women have learned to reproduce (they only have girl babies) without the aid of men. In Herland, everything is done for the good of society rather than for the individual. Two of the men embrace Herland, while one man cannot fathom how women could get along without men for some 2,000 years. Inevitably the story ends badly with the men having to flee the utopia.

I am not sure I can totally get on board with this book, mostly because the little things like spontaneous reproduction is never really explained in a way that made sense to me. But otherwise, it was an interesting read. Gilman was quite a shit disturber back her day; you go girl.

The Far Pavilions by M.M. Kaye
The Far Pavilions tells the story of the life of Ashton/Ash/Ashok. Ash is born to two British nobles in India. His mother was an adventurous woman and his father a noted scholar. Both of his parents die before he is 6 years old; leaving him in the company of Sita (his nurse). Since Ash looks more like an Indian than a Brit, Sita passes the boy off as her own. And the tale begins. Ash saves the young future Raj of a provincial area and becomes the boy's body servant for many years. During that time he makes life long friends with the horse master and his family and more importantly, with Anjuli, the sister of the young Raj.

When Ash's life becomes endangered at the palace, he escapes and makes his way to his real family. He gets shipped off to England. But India never really leaves Ash. He becomes a soldier and is returned to India. Ash is involved in many skirmishes throughout the country and is often used as a spy because of his intricate knowledge of a variety of languages. Eventually Ash runs into Anjuli again. Love ensues. Ash also ends up in Afghanistan fighting against the Russians.

This book was huge! It was over 1,000 pages and many times I was like enough already. But M.M. Kaye does describe things in intricate detail. This book was originally published in 1978 and the dead on description of tribal life in Afghanistan could be describing today just as easily as it could 1870 whatever. For that I give Ms. Kaye her props. This was an interesting read but it just took me forever to get through it. Maybe I will netflix the movie version.

Why Moms are Weird by Pamela Ribon

I know that Marissa reviewed this book for her blog but I cannot resist saying something about my beloved Pamie's book.

This time around Pamie focuses on the nuances of that often illusive mother-daughter relationship. When Benny's mother and sister are in a car accident, Benny leaves her life in L.A. to help out back home. While helping out, Benny finds out some things about her mother and sister and herself that she never expected.

It's not a shocker that I loved this book. It was an easy read. I pretty much finished it in a day because I couldn't put it down. I think I related a little too much to Benny. I could see aspects of her personality that reflect my own. Anyway, it's a good read.

And finally,

752 Things We Love to Hate and Hate to Love about TV by Tara Ariano and Sarah D. Bunting

This book is arranged in alphabetical order and contains some pretty funny analysis of people, ideas, and shows on and off (aka no longer on) television. Check out a little preview of the book here.

This is a book I picked up for a couple of reasons. First, Wing and Sars wrote the damn thing. It's going to be funny and possibly annoy me at the same time. Heh. Second, it's a nice addendum to my prep work for the World Series of Pop Culture auditions coming up in a frakkin' month. But mostly, I love this book because it just emphasizes all the reasons why I love and hate TWoP. Plus, an entry on Clone High. Stamos!

Wow, this is going to be a long post.

On the television front, well, it's been Battlestar Galactica all the time. This is not a bad thing. I finished Season One of BSG last night. I have to say that starting things in Season Three (as I did) left me with a shit ton of questions. Often the show would end and I would say well, that was pretty awesome and also, HUH? But now that I have seen season one I have many less questions. Can I just say that I love and hate Starbuck? I mean, sometimes I just want to smack her but then I get to watch her in a girl fight with Three and all I can think is poor Starbuck. Also, Baltar is so evil and funny at the same time. He may just be my favorite character.

I watched all of the extras and such. Jamie Bamber's real accent is awesome. It's a shame he doesn't get to use it on the series. I loved him trying to say bugger American style. Heh.

Right now, I am eagerly awaiting the hotness that is Sam Anders. He must show up in season two.

And now, on to movies.

I finally saw Borat. All I can say about that is I love US and A. Hee. I won't bore you for two long with my thoughts. However, I have to say that I probably would have laughed more had I not heard so many of the jokes ahead of time. That said, I did laugh quite often. Of course, this movie not for the politically correct or the faint of heart. I was disturbed many times but I mean that as a good thing. Also, Pamela Anderson has a much better sense of humor than I ever gave her credit for. Go Pam!

Anyhoodle, I promise to be better about posting in the days and weeks to come.

Happy New Year!

An early Christmas present

I think that I have talked to you before about my love of Justin Timberlake. Today is not different from that day a few months ago. I don't know how many of you watched SNL last weekend but JT was host. He and Adam Samberg did the funniest skit called D**k in a Box. Anytime I can get a little JT and a lot of mocking Color Me Badd is a good time. So, check it out.

Fraktastic Thursday

Sometimes the Internets make me smile. Especially when I get cool free stuff because of said Internets. For example, on Thursday I have two passes (Thanks, TV Guide) to see the Battlestar Galactica mid-season finale at the Tivoli theater. I think it's going to be pretty awesome to see BSG on the big screen. I will try not to spoil you all on Friday with the details. Assuming, of course, the uber geeks don't beat me to the line. Lucky for me, I work very close to the Tivoli.

Make it Work

Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Season Four of Project Runway may not include Tim Gunn. All I have to say to that is Project Runway without Tim Gunn gets a big Auf Wiedersehen from me. Make it Work, people.

Radiators and Firefly

Lately I have been tired. Like really tired. I know the culprit behind my lack of sleep. It's my heating system. I've never lived in a place with radiators before and they take some getting used to. For the past week or so I have been woken up by the strange noises coming from my radiators. The strangest part though is they they make noises at night that they don't seem to make when I am awake. The last few nights I have been woken up about 5 different times a night. It's really starting to annoy me. Is it so much to ask that I get a full night's rest?

So, last week I tried in vain to begin Firefly. I know I said I was going to watch BSG first but there is too long of a wait for season one on Netflix. Sigh. Anyway, I fell asleep watching Firefly, probably because I am so frakkin' tired, but I am giving Firefly another shot tonight. It's strange seeing Gina Torres as not evil. I mean, she's frakkin' Ana Espinosa. But I do love Wash aka Steve the Pirate from Dodgeball. Hee.

In other television news, FX is at the point in the Buffy reruns where tomorrow is Graduation Day Part II. Upon reflection, it's one of my favorite episodes. Not only is it super poignant and, at the same time, odd but it's got the very hot quasi-sex/bloodletting between Buffy and Angel. I think that scene was hotter than the actual sex scene they had back in season two. Anyway, tomorrow will be a good day for those of us who don't own the Buffy dvds (i.e. me).

Santa Came Early

Good Monday morning to you all! You may be wondering why I am so happy considering that most of the people I know are without power this morning (and have been for several days). Well, Santa came to my house last night in the form of my parental units with this:

It's my new, huge tv. And I pretty much love every inch of it. It fits perfectly in my entertainment center and it's BIG. I'd have to say that the best part though it the fact that I can hook up tivo and the dvd player at the same time. My old tv did not allow this (Yes, my old tv was very old. I calculated and it was 12 years old. Damn!). It's brilliant.

Also, last night I bought myself the long awaited and long wanted Songs for Christmas five disc set by Sufjan Stevens. I'm listening to it right now. It's basically as great as I thought it would be. I like it when I am not disappointed. I know that some people might not think me all that sentimental but I have always been a sucker for Chrsitmas tunes, even during those four hellish Christmas seasons working at Target.

I finally read another book and I need to write about that but I am just so ecxited about my tv that I can't really concentrate on the book right now.

I think I have a crush on Ben Gibbard

Last night I went to The Pageant to see Ok Go and Death Cab for Cutie with my pals Deanna and Mat.

Ok Go put on a great show in spite of the vocal ailments of the lead singer. He apparently only starting speaking again a few hours before the show began. I don't really know Ok Go's music. I only know the one song with the treadmill video. But their music was pretty good so I bought one of their cds. I've been listening to it this morning and it's, not surprisingly, good. They finished their set with a lovely dance performance. I was seriously impressed by the choreography.

The real story of the night was the Death Cab performance. First, I should say that Deanna and Mat aren't huge Death Cab fans. They each know a few songs here and there and I would say they know more Postal Service than Death Cab. I was kind of wishing that Bill was in the crowd with me since he is the one who turned me on to Death Cab. Although, I think Bill was with me in spirit as a bright yellow Focus was parked next to my car in the parking lot. I took that as a sign.

I was a little unsure what to expect out of the band's performance. I was thinking it would be a somewhat low key performance. Boy was I wrong. Ben Gibbard is kind of like a dancing fool up there on stage. Not that he looks foolish just that he basically is dancing around with his guitar through most of the show. The show was super up beat, even songs that I would classify as slower sounded more upbeat and happy live. Don't know exactly how they managed that.

I was so impressed by Ben Gibbard who played the piano, guitar, and drums during the 1 hour 40 minute set. They did a nice job of integrating new and old songs. There were only two songs played that I didn't know. Must have been off of their earliest discs. I heard every song I wanted to hear except Tiny Vessels.

Anyway, the show was great. If you get a chance to see this Fall tour, I highly recommend it.

And this too shall pass

I haven't done a Gilmore Girls recap in a while. There is no particular reason other than a general feeling of "eh" about the show. Plus, I was more than a bit peeved at the way Lorelai and Christopher were heading. I suppose if I am going to comment at least this week I get to mention Lane.

The Bad: Yep I am just getting right to the point.

Lorelai married Christopher. There. I typed it. Thankfully we didn't have to see the actual wedding. I think I might have puked. Alas, I take hope in the fact that Lorelai looked very sad when addressed as Mrs. Hayden. Let the journey back to Luke begin.

Also, in the bad....not enough Luke.

The Good:

Rory's meltdown: I thought it was very realistic. I went through a similar experience at her age so I could relate.

Marty!: Yay! Marty's back. I love how he is acting like he has no idea who Rory is. It's cold and kind of mean but Rory was pretty obtuse when he was obviously smitten. Plus, Marty's looking fine.

Mama Kim: Any episode with Mama Kim is a good thing. I loved how she just moved in with Lane and Zach. Hee. That is a spin-off show in itself.

Lane and Zach: I am liking them together more and more. I think it's funny how they are both just crazed over becoming parents of twins. Although, they are going to need a bigger place. And which one of them has health insurance? I doubt Luke has a plan for his employees. I mean, who is paying for the birth of them babies? Also, I read on Kekio's site that she is not actually pregnant but last night it looked very realistic.

Paris: I liked the little pedeconference between Paris and Rory. Paris pretty much had Rory's number minus all the antidepressants. Who knows after next week and the big reveal? Rory could hit the Lexipro pretty hard core.

Seeing is believing

Having good eyesight is something I have always struggled with (thanks Mom and BioDad). I started wearing glasses in the second grade. I wore glasses or contacts up to the point where I made the not too smart decision to get Radial Keratotomy. That fact that I was trusting some dude to slice open my eye was minor in comparison to my 20 year old mind saying "no glasses FOREVER."

Well, my doctor was not the best of docs. He messed up my eyes and then didn't tell me. I went about my merry way for a few years until one semester of graduate school reading took a toll on my eyes. When I went to a new doctor to get some reading glasses I was informed of the very serious nature of my eye sight, or lack thereof. I was told I would never be able to wear glases again since my eyes were so drastically different. I wasn't so bummed about that since I had gotten used to a face without spectacles. What I forgot to account for that the toll that wearing contacts everyday takes on your eyes. It's hard, y'all, to put in contacts every morning.

But alas, I went for my annual eye checkup this weekend. My new, rather nice eye doctor and I had a long talk about my eyes. She said that both my eyes were so horrible that I can wear glasses again! Yay! And also boo at the same time. So, by next week I should have a pair of glasses again. I can only wear them one or two days a week because of my eye condition (i.e. frakked). But, it will be nice to give my eyes a lil' break from the contacts. I didn't get any "cute librarian" frames. I just got some nice wire rimmed specs. Honestly, the glasses reminded me of Trotsky and that is kind of why I bought them. Trotsky was the cutest of the Bolshevik Revolutionaries, just ask Frida Kahlo.

Also, I cut my hair this weekend. It's goodbye to ponytails and hello to bob city. You may not even recognize me the next time we meet.

Ring my bell

This seems like a silly thing to post about but today I got two phone calls at work. Crazy! Some of you may be thinking to yourself "big frakin' deal," but since I have started my new job I have never received to phone calls in a day. It's been exciting here. Ha!

Seriously though, a lot of people ask me how I am liking the new gig. Apparently, I have not been responding with the vigor some feel I should have since I landed my "dream job." I guess you could say I am adjusting. This place is so vastly different from my last place of employment that it is difficult to make comparisons. I mean, I basically have funds to do whatever I want and that is strange and scary. My boss cares about me and wants to me succeed. These are not things I am accustom to. Also, cataloging is hard, y'all. I am not sure I am picky enough to become as good as I need to be but I am trying.

I can tell you all this much; I miss students. On a normal day I don't see any college kids or help them in person at all. I've had a few email reference questions and that's great. But, I really miss students. The whole point of working on a college campus for me is the interaction with the students. My department is divided by people who like students and people who just want to catalog books but why does it have to be an either/or issue? Can't you like students and catalog books? Tuesday is my day at the main library and I get to see students there but I don't get to help them. I am looking for ways to get back into teaching a library skills course or something of that nature just to hang with the kiddies. If I learned one thing at my old gig it was how much fun (and yes, frustrating) college students can be.

Anyway, I don't know how much I will be posting between now and Thanksgiving. I am going to a conference next week and won't be back to work until after the holiday. But, if you have any restaurant recommendations for Boston, please comment away.

GMYH makes me sad

Well, my one and only reliable link to The O.C.; the one I have come to depend on for accurate, insightful, sometimes snarky info has made me sad. GMYH doesn't like Che. I 've never watched a whole episode of The O.C. although the chances of that happening greatly improved once Misha Barton was offed. However, I have always been able to turn to my trusty, head-banging GMYH for a solid recap of the current week's O.C.

I anxiously awaited GMYH's analysis of Summer's hippie friend. Oh, boy, did I get an analysis. Here's what he had to say about my beloved Chris Pratt:

In addition to referring to herself as post-ironic, she has befriended a guy at Brown -- the kind of overexaggerated hippie who shits in a bucket and doesn't wipe so that he can save water and trees -- who looks like he smells bad and is clearly too dumb to get into Brown in real life, but does have a dijereedoo, which is apparently not only for Aborigines anymore. In fact, it is implied by Josh Schwartz and McG that there are people in the world whose idea of having fun is sitting in an Ivy League dorm room and jamming with a bongo, clavas, and a dijereedoo, all while not getting drunk or high. The hippie dude actually said, "Your turn to jam on the dij'." I wish I made that up. Sadly, it was followed soon thereafter with "Wherever you go, there you are," said with no hint of irony.

Now, I will conceed that from GMYH's description the writers of The O.C. have made Pratt sound like a frakkin' douche. I hope that stops soon and that the viewers of The O.C. will soon begin to appreciate the funny that Pratt can bring.

But if you don't want to wait for this week's O.C.; you should check out season two of Everwood on ABCFamily. And no, I will not let it go. My heart will go on for the Everwood.

Wish you were here

Last weekend there were multiple parties happening in Indiana and I was even invited to two of them. B-Mart has the details of her party over on her blog. Now, don't take this the wrong way, B-Mart because I totally love you and miss hanging out with you but the party I wish I could have attended was Robyn's party. It's nothing personal; it's just that Robyn's party was populated with a ton of people I consider to be my pals. Plus, the drunk dial I got on Saturday night told me that I missed a pretty good time; also, if I am not there to act as DJ is it really a party? Anyway, I got sent some pretty awesome pictures from Robyn's party. I am going to post them here and, of course, make some comments.

Incriminating/Funny Image 1:

Here we have Eduardo as some sort of Skeleton man, Robyn as Miss Elizabeth Bennett, and Jeff as some amalgam of Gary Oldman's Dracula and Johnny Depp. I really love Jeff's costume. It just makes me laugh and also think very Jeff. Heeeeeee. But the really question is where is Mr. Darcy? Couldn't anyone get a wet Colin Firth to come to Southern Indiana?

Incriminating/Funny Image 2:

Here we have the boogie down butterfly/fairy Kay and Mike Sodrel aka Dodgeman. I laughed out loud at this picture. I can hardly believe that Dodge topped last year's go round as the Moyer but he did it. Oh and folks, go out and defeat whatever version of Sodrel you can on November 7.

Incriminating/Funny Image 3:

This is possibly my favorite picture of the evening. First we have Sodrel again (picture whore much?), then we have Bring in the Paynes as K-Fed and Britney with a little mock up of Sean Preston. Love the boob grab, Payne. Then we have Mr. Chemistry as Buchman (someone you would only know by living in Hanover) and then two differing versions of pirates.

Incriminating/Funny Image 4:

This picture isn't really all that funny or incriminating. I just wanted everyone to see the cute as a button Mrs./Dr. Dodge. She is the naughty doc who sent me this even though she pretends like she doesn't know anything about it. Also, I am not so sure I want a drunkard doc working on me. Better leave all your drunken doctoring to working on Sodrel.

And finally the last picture.

Here we have the oh so smartly not dressed up Purvii, Pat as some cross between himself and Mark Foley's intern and the Payne/Federlines. That Britney is a dirty whore for grabbing Pat's crotch right there in front of KFed. But then I guess that is no big shocker.

Anyway, it looks like you all had some good, not precisely clean fun. Wish I could have been there. Maybe next year.

*I apologize for the delay of this post. Blogger and I were fighting over the uploading of images. Blogger won a battle or two but I won the war, as I tend to do.

There are no words

Friday night I got to see the St. Louis Cardinals become the World Series champions. I was there. 30 rows from the field. I have been trying to explain to people what it was like to be a part of this experience. But really there are no words. The stadium was buzzing. I could feel it the minute I got off the Metrolink. There was an excitement, an electricity in the air. Everyone was just so happy to be there; hoping, knowing that the Cards would make this our year.

As I walked into the stadium with my Moms, we were discussing the last time the Cards won the Series in 1982. I can tell you that there aren't a lot of things I remember about 1982 and the Cards winning the Series is one of them. One of the things I do remember is being jealous of my friend Andi for having a Han Solo doll that was the perfect size to play Barbies and I desperately wanted her to let me play with Han Solo just once so my Barbie could kiss Han. Anyway....

Friday night was intense. There was a small part of me that really thought we might not win when we went down 2-1 but then my boys came out and played. I have to give some major props to Dave Eckstein. That little dude earned every cent of his salary this year. He really did a fantastic job. Yadier Molina was pretty damn fabulous too. I can see him becoming one of the best catchers in baseball if he keeps it up.

After the game, all the fans poured out into the streets around the stadium. It was sort of like controlled chaos. People were so happy. I have never given out so many high fives in my life. My hand actually stung for a while. And my voice was a bit hoarse from all the yelling.

Of course, there was a copious amount of drinking that took place. Although, it did take us a while to find a bar that still had beer. We walked to two places that were sold out and this was all the more ironic since we could essentially see Anheuser Busch brewing facilities. However, we did eventually find beer and many happy drunks. I didn't see a fight or scuffle or any meanness going on. I didn't even see any mocking of the Detroit fans in the crowd.

It's an experience I will never forget. I can't wait to be that little old lady talking about how I was at the 2006 World Series where we inaugurated our new stadium with a glorious, underdog win.

GO CARDS!

This is messed up

You know, I think I have done a pretty good job of keeping this blog lighthearted and politics free. I never wanted this space to become a polarizing place where I would offend people like Mike or Bill or whoever. But somedays I come across a news story that really makes me sick.

In Ohio, good thing you moved out of there before you had kids Andrew and Jessie, some peewee footballers show us just how far we have come in our fight against racism. You know, I don't totally blame the kids; someone must have put that idea in their head or heard it and said, "Great Idea, Adolf". Clearly their parents bought them the paint and the wigs, the frying pans, and then drove their punk asses to the football game. And that is just wrong. These people should really be ashamed but I am sure they aren't. Most racists aren't ashamed of their behavior.

If Jane Fonda was a librarian

She would be appalled and amused by the Betty Glover Library Workout tape.

It's funny to see things from the Eighties and it's nice to see how much libraries have changed and how much they have stayed the same.

Frak me

There have been rumors going around the internets that bad things (FRAKKIN CHRISTOPHER) are afoot in Stars Hollow. And now, there is confirmation. Don't click on this link unless you really want to know how badly I hate Lorelai Gilmore right this second.

Link to hellish news. Frakkin Palladinos and their studip storylines and the mess they left. Although, I suppose I can't really blame this one on them. Stupidheads.

What a long, strange trip it's been

After thirteen months, I can finally say I have seen every episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel. I have to say that over all seasons three and five were my favorites in Angelverse.

Season five ended so strangely to me. I mean, it doesn't make sense to me to go on a suicide mission. Especially when that mission involves Spike. Why are you putting Spike in harm's way, Angel? However, I would have to say it was an interesting way to end the show. But before I talk about the finale, I want to speak for a second about The Girl in Question. That episode had me laughing out loud. All the Spike and Angel jealousy over The Immortal. He's been stealing their chics for centuries. Ha! I think the chemistry between Angel and Spike is fabulous. Spike brings the funny in big ways. Also, I call foul on Andrew dating women. That dude is gay; there is no other reason why he would love Warren so much.

Anyway, on to the final episode. I liked how it played out generally. I loved that Lorne killed Lindsey. Man, the anger that Lindsey had about Angel sending Lorne to kill him was so believable. "Angel was supposed to kill me," indeed Lindsey. A fitting end to a fun bad guy. Wes's death actually made me cry. I liked that Illyria turned into Fred for Wes's final moments. It seemed fitting that Fred was a part of the finale. Connor's return was even welcome. I liked the one-on-one scene with Angel and Connor. It's nice that Connor wasn't a whiny asshole and even gasp thanked gasp Angel.

The open ended way they left it makes me wish Angel would have had a season six. It would be interesting to see who survives. And, if Spike lives, does this mean that he is human now? I think that would make for an interesting story line. How would Spike react to being a real boy and not having super Vamp strength and immortality? And how would Angel deal with signing away the prophecy? I've heard movie rumors going around but I wouldn't be shocked if that never happens. Guess I will have to come to my own conclusions.

I was planning on getting into Firefly but I really want to catch up on the back story of Battlestar Galactica. So, I am going to watch BSG before getting back into Joss territory.

Rain, rain go away

Some of you may not know this but I have tickets to the Cards-Mets game tonight. Now, if only the weather would frakkin cooperate.

I am so excited to go to my first Cardinals game of the season. I think it's pretty bitchin' that my first time in the new Busch Stadium is for a playoff game. What makes this game even better is not only are my seats awesome (I'm in section 152 just to the left of home plate; look for my blue poncho and red stocking cap. Although on tv I think I will be just to the right of home plate.) but also they were free tickets. Sometimes it's good to have a mother who works.

At any rate, it's been raining all day which is bad for the field and won't make the most enjoyable game. None-the-less, I will be cheering on my Cardinals. Here's to hoping we make it to the big dance and not get swept this time.

Disgust with BMG

There was a time when I really liked BMG. You know, the company that sells you cds for really cheap. That time may have had something to do with my "roommates" Karl Rove, Condoleezza Rice, and Karen Hughes getting a lot of cds for free and they just gave them to me. Some of you who hung out at my apartment then may not remember seeing my roommies but always know they were present in spirit. Anyway, I recently rejoined BMG. It's a good way to beef up your cd collection with old stuff for pretty cheap. However I have been having an issue with shipping recently. The last two orders I put in to BMG never came. I was charged but they never came. Or at least they didn't until I emailed them to remind them that charging me for goods I never received is a bad way to practice business.

But yesterday was the real kicker. See, I am on the email me and I will tell you if I want this month's chosen selection list. Well, I forgot to check that other email address for a couple of weeks. So, I got sent some cd I will most likely never listen to. What irks me is the items I ordered in August have yet to arrive but guess what I get yesterday? You'd be right if you said the monthly selection. Guess who is getting another email from me today? BMG, that's who.

In other news about my mail, somehow I have been subscribed to Sporting News. Why and how this happened is a mystery to me. I am sure I know some guy who might want these magazines. I know I won't be reading them. Unless, I can read up on the Bengals. Then maybe I would have a clue who Robyn is talking about when she starts the football chatter. Hee.

On the Angel front, I am steadily making my way through season five. Spike just got his hands cut off. That was frakkin disturbing. I am elated to see Lindsay back on the screen though. Interested to see how this all plays out. Also, is it possible that Wes just gets hotter and hotter each episode? I think it might be the case.

Frakkin Beth

Beth, I could kill you for getting me into Battlestar Galactica. It's brilliant and written better than anything I have watched since Everwood. I am only sorry haven't started watching until now. I feel a little lost but I get the feeling that by the fourth or fifth episode I will have a good deal of it figured out. Now here's the thing though, Beth. I have started watching Buffy, Angel, Firefly (well, it's in the netflix queue) and now Battlestar Galactica. Have you even tried to watch an hour of Everwood?

Battlestar Galactica scares me a little mostly because America = Cylon. Freaky deaky! This show is spot on with it's interesting political intrigue. Who would have thought that a revamped 70's show could be so awesome? Anyway, I like the show very much which is sort of the last thing I need right now because I am enjoying too many new shows this season. Something is going to have to get cut soon. More than likely that something will be Six Degrees. Sorry, J.J.

Besides television I have become obsessed with Trader Joe's. I make my trek every Sunday to fill up on delicious goodies. Their sun-dried tomato and basil hummus is frakkin awesome. Also, their spanikopita rules too. Anyway, if you've never been to Trader Joe's you should check them out. Pretty rocking place.

ETA: I think some people coughRobyncough thought I would be mad about last night's Gilmore Girls. Well, you're wrong. I've accepted that Lorelai will be dating Chris. I didn't say I liked it but I have accepted it as a given. So, fine. Let's see how this plays out. The funny thing is, I really used to like Christopher. I always thought they have good chemistry. But as his character played itself out; Chris just seems really selfish to me. I suppose we will have to watch and see.

On the Lane front, while I am unhappy that she remains pregnant, it was good to see she and Zach were going to attempt the nasty again. In a bed this time. And I liked the Rory and Logan dirty texting. Hee. And that she stole it from Paris and Doyle. Bigger hee.

Freaking Glarkware

How do Glark and his minions keep coming up with tees I want to buy? Like this new one: Crackpipe remote. If only it looked a little more like my beloved tivo remote.

For those of you who love Battlestar Galactica, they have come up with this lovely gem. The Frakkin Toaster. Hee.

Off to spend more money on tees I don't technically need.

I think I might like television shows

Last night I sat down to watch a couple of episodes of Angel season five (aka Season Spike!). They were pretty good, in case you were wondering. I am loving the interactions between Angel and Spike. I think it brings a level of wit and humor that the show has been lacking for a while. My one real complaint is that Gunn is always in a suit. I get it; he's the lawyer man now but can't we see him in jeans and a tee every now and again?

Also, I have to say that Lost just didn't do it for me last night. I mean, we really got very little info on the Others and we are basically right where we were at the beginning of the episode. I don't know if I am sticking around for the whole season of this show. I am going to see how the next few weeks play out.

In other news, I loved the Project Runway reunion show. It was pretty fun. Although, Keith pretty much solidified himself as a total ass. I am so sure the producers sabotaged you and that a P.A. told you to leave. Take some responsibility for your actions, dude. I am excited to see what happens in the final two episodes. Who will win? I've purposely avoided looking at the collections online so I can be surprised when they come down the runway. And, congrats to Michael for winning fan fave (and how cute were those braces?). If I had voted, he would have gotten my vote.

Better late than never?

Sorry Robyn for not posting this sooner. But I really loved and a little bit disliked last night's Gilmore Girls episode. Here's the breakdown.

The Beloved:

Luke punched Christopher. Fucking Christopher.

Kirk as faux Luke. That was pretty damn funny.

Rory's complete smackdown of Lorelai for sleeping with Fucking Christopher. I think Rory looked as hurt as Luke did.

The Lorelai meltdown. I'll admit that I got choked up a bit after the grocery store run in.

The Bad:

Luke telling Lorelai she's supposed to be with someone like Christopher and he'll just pour her coffee. First off, no. Lor may have been reared in the upper class but she ain't one of them. And no one deserves a douche like Fucking Christopher.

Liz telling Luke that he and Lorelai were on different planes. I am not so sure I agree with that assessment. Also, TJ's voice just annoys me.

The Horrible:

Lane is pregnant. Why would they do this to her character? Does someone on the writing staff really hate Lane or rather, Keiko? Because no one in a fledging rock band who has been married for about two weeks is going to want a baby. I do not see hilarity ensuing. Especially since they made Lane hate sex. God. Is it wrong that I hope she miscarries or something?

All in all, it really felt like the Gilmore Girls of olden days. I don't know about the rest of my fellow GG lovers but I am not missing ASP.

The one where I rant about car alarms

Ever since I've been old enough to drive and, thus, owned my own car I've hated car alarms. Most people don't own cars that are so expensive that they need an alarm. And, if they do then they generally have a driver, negating the need for an alarm. If you live in a city and have a car alarm that you set or have a neighbor who has a car alarm that they set, then you know how easy it is for the punk kid on your block to fuck with you and set off said alarm.

Also, most of the time when people set their car alarms; they aren't fucking there to hear the god damn thing go off. So, what the fuck good does it do you? None. Because if someone is going to steal your car then they are going to steal your damn car. That is why you have car insurance, the quiet, silent car alarm.

Some of you may be wondering why I am on a tear about car alarms. Well, let me tell you why. Saturday morning, very early, around 4 am a car alarm went off. It probably went off several times before I actually work up because I am a pretty sound sleeper. Well, from 4am-9am, that fucking alarm went off almost non-stop. I refused to get out of bed mostly out of spite. I would not let that alarm beat me. I would not give up my sleeping in day to that car alarm. I was also thankful I didn't have a kid who couldn't sleep because of that damn alarm.

As the day progressed there was no more disturbance from the alarm. That is until about 9pm. Yes, I realize that this means I was home on a Saturday night at 9pm. Hey, shut up. I was out until 2am on Friday. As I was looking at my phone trying to figure out who to call, not 911 since this isn't an emergency, but the police for sure. I look out my balcony to see one of my neighbors beat me to it. So, the alarm went off until about midnight and then the car was gone. I don't know if it was towed or what. I don't care. All I know is if I see that car near my home again, I am spitting on it. If you don't believe me, ask Bill. He's seen me spit on a car.

Ugly Betty

So, last night I watched the premiere of Ugly Betty. What a great show! I think America Ferrara is a fabulous actress. I've loved her since I saw Real Women Have Curves. The show is just the right mix of sweetness, sadness, and camp. The rest of the cast is pretty good too. Her boss, and the evil folks at work are a nice balance to her home life. Her nephew is about adorable and a half. He does need to give our dear Betty some fashion advice though. This show is getting the tivo season pass.

In other news, I finished season four of Angel last night. That was really a horrible season. Such a let down after the great season three. Anyway, I am glad to see the Connor won't be around next season. Fred's "Who's Connor?" line was great. I wonder how these folks will handle being the big bosses of Wolfram and Hart? I can't wait to find out, plus SPIKE. I need some Spike.

I like cute, funny boys who play guitars. So, sue me.

Have any of you been reading John Mayer's blog? He doesn't post everyday but when he does it makes me chuckle. Recently, Rolling Stone had an article about Mayer, which I read since I am a subscriber. In it they go on and on about how John Mayer wants to do comedy. I for one can see that.

A few years back VH1 had this show with john Mayer called "John Mayer Has A TV Show." It was pretty funny. He did all these silly sketches with people and it made me laugh. It made me like his music even more than I already do.

Anyway, go check out his blog. I do. I think I might go buy his new disc too.
